What is a Universal Testing Machine and how it perform material testing?

Universal Testing Machine(UTM) is a type of mechanical testing equipment that can perform standard-compliant tests on various materials, measuring their strength, durability and flexibility. Whether you need to measure tensile strength, compression resistance, or bending properties, this machine applies controlled force and displacement to assess a material’s mechanical behavior with precision. The “universal” aspect of the machine signifies its ability to handle a wide range of materials, from metals and polymers to ceramics and composites, as well as conduct multiple types of tests. Our current hydraulic models are TBTUTM-1000C, TBTUTM-2000C, TBTUTM-3000Z, electronic models are TBTWDW-50H, TBTWDW-100H, TBTWDW-200J.

The working principle of UTM

Universal Testing Machine works by applying a controlled force to a test sample, measuring the resulting deformation or response. That is, using a loading device and simultaneously measure the magnitude of the force applied to the tested sample and the corresponding value of the displacement of the movable crosshead (active grip). The force is measured by converting the load via a force-measuring sensor into an electrical signal that changes proportionally to the applied load.

How it perform material testing?

Step1: Equipment calibration

Calibrate the machine to ensure accurate force application, then set specifications such as loading speed as per sample testing requirements.

Step2: Sample preparation

Prepare the sample according to relevant standards, check whether the fixture is firmly installed to ensure that the force is even and without eccentricity.

Step3: Apply and measure the force

After starting the equipment, the machine will apply loading force, compression, tensile, bending on the samples. Then the machine measures the amount of force that the sample can withstand when collapsing or breaking down.

Step4: Record the data

After the test is completed, the data will be recorded automatically, different kinds of values and curves can be formulated, such as tensile strength, yield strength, etc. These data can be easily obtained in the form of word or excel.
